Parents who encourage sports participation are giving their youngsters an advantage in the area of an athletic career.

Natural talent is usually the greatest factor in the success of a professional athlete. You can improve on areas of strength and skill but if there is little natural athletic ability then no amount of training will allow for a career as a professional athlete.

Young children who start sports participation through local programs are also given the opportunity to increase their skill levels and also reveal their natural athletic ability.

Athletes and Motivation

In sports games ” whether they be individual or teams ” the deciding factor of winning and losing is sometimes determined by a level of motivation by the players. Both of these types of motivation can be beneficial.

Extrinsic
This type of motivation comes from external sources. This includes wanting to receive the reward, ie money or other payment. There is also the opposite extrinsic motivation, that of some sort of punishment such as losing a scholarship.

Both of these “desire and fear ” are very powerful forces for performance and are beneficial to an athlete and his or her performance. These types of forces can help an athlete develop new strategies and skills.

On the other hand, if an athlete is motivated only by outside sources, they may experience high levels of anxiety before a game or event, and they may experience guilt if their performance was sub-par.

Intrinsic

This type of motivation is completely internal to the athlete. These people play for the enjoyment and the inner satisfaction received. These are those who play for fun.

These intrinsically motivated athletes are less likely to experience guilt or stress. They also may have more confidence and are less likely to lose interest in the sport.

Inner motivation may not be as strong of a factor as those external factors and may not allow a person to play past exhaustion or train harder.

Athletes may have many of each type of motivational forces. Unfortunately the extrinsic forces can either strengthen or weaken the inner reasons an athlete plays his or her game.
